Kaleo Sermon Notes: RSVP, Day 10, Cost of Discipleship

[Mat 22:11-14 ESV] 11 "But when the king came in to look at the guests, he saw there a man who had no wedding garment. 12 And he said to him, 'Friend, how did you get in here without a wedding garment?' And he was speechless. 13 Then the king said to the attendants, 'Bind him hand and foot and cast him into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.' 14 For many are called, but few are chosen."

This invited guest came to the king on his own terms. He wanted to join the party without having to actually submit to his reasonable rule. There is evidence that in the ancient world a king would supply all of his guests with the proper attire freely (Genesis 45:22, Esther 6:8-9) and God does the same for His people (Ezekiel 16:10-13).This parable shows us the cost of discipleship, which is often lost on our current generation in its self guided and soft approach to faith.

While no one is worthy of salvation on his/her own merit, one must put on the right kind of clothes in carrying out the profession of our faith. For us this means submission and the devotion to follow through on our call to be a genuine disciple of Christ Jesus (Luke 9:23). Christ's call to us is to lay aside a wasted, self-centered, dying life and put on His life, which is eternal, growing, and abundant (2 Corinthians 5:1-7).

*Life Point* Come to Christ on His terms by faith and follow Him devotedly.
