Bible Study Notes in Isaiah- Chapter 34

Isaiah 34

-God speaks forth indignation (wrath, righteous anger, splintered twig) against the nations of the world with a singling out in particular of Edom (Idumea, from Esau, Jacob’s unfavored son who rebelled against the LORD). God will utterly destroy them (Isaiah 34:1-2, 5). There will be a slaughter from the sword of the LORD in judgment and the sky will be rolled up like a scroll with brimstone much like the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah with only wild animals and wild plants abiding in the region (Genesis 18:20-19:29, Isaiah 34:2b-15, Revelation 6:14-17). God will fulfill His intended purpose in this apocalyptic scene. We are told in verse sixteen to “seek from the book of the LORD, and read.” God’s prophetic “mouth has commanded” these events to come to pass and “His Spirit has gathered them.” From generation to generation the wild animals will dwell in the place of this destruction (Isaiah 34:17). As so often occurs in prophecy, the partial fulfillment occurs with some completion still to come. In interpreting this passage, the question which arises is this: Is this referring to the actual events of a historical people group, or is it spiritualized denoting the rebellious enemies of God in the end times? In other words, who are the Edomites presently? For an interesting read on this perspective see http://endtimepilgrim.org/edomites.htm. *Application* Seek from the book of the LORD and read. His Word is always true and will be carried out to complete fulfillment. “The LORD has a day of vengeance, a year of recompense for the cause of Zion (Isaiah 34:8).” Strongly support the children of Abraham, Israel, and you will end up being blessed by the Living God (Genesis 12:3). Defy Him and pay the price.

Verse to Memorize: Isaiah 34:8
