Kaleo Sermon Notes: Colossians 1:21

[Col 1:21 ESV] 21 And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds,

Jesus said that everything we are about as human beings starts in the heart (Matthew 5:19). This is the seat of moral decision making, which is vitally connected to our minds and the way that we think. Before Christ comes in and gives us His heart and righteousness as a new creation in Him (2 Corinthians 5:17), we are alienated (we don't belong to God) and hostile (unfriendly, antagonistic, opposed) in our natural way of thinking and living. It is no wonder the lost do what they do. It is the normal state of existence in separation from the love of Christ and His new way to live.

We have to realize that we were all at one time in this state. We must be amazed by the fact that God's grace and mercy is sufficient to clear us from a guilty verdict in the case of our hostility and separation from His holiness. When we turn to Him in faith, what was ugly becomes beautiful and we gain His presence, which changes us from the inside-out.

*Life Point* "Amazing grace how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me. I once was lost, but now I'm found, was blind but now I see." - John Newton
