Kaleo Sermon Notes: Colossians 1:18-20

[Colossians 1:18-20 ESV] 18 And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. 19 For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.

The text makes a move to the spiritual realm here in verse 18 as we see Jesus as the spiritual and authoritative Head of His Church. He controls the body, supreme, or having first place, in everything. Just like the head in our body, which controls and dictates what will happen in our thinking and actions, Jesus takes responsibility to direct His followers in the Church. He will present us spotless before the Father because of His righteousness that we can partake of by faith (Philippians 3:9, Colossians 1:22, Jude 1:24). He is the original resurrection and the life (John 11:25).

Again we see in verse 19 that Jesus is God and possesses all the fullness of the Father in His incarnation (the embodiment of God the Son in human flesh). In other words, He shows us who the Father is on our level.

Finally we see that Jesus is in the reconciling business in verse 20. He makes peace with all of us who have sinned against God through His sacrificially shed blood. Heaven and earth now have the unique opportunity to "connect" through the cross of Jesus Christ!

*Life Point* Christ is God who leads us into perfect union with Himself bringing the glory of Heaven to earth.
