Psalms Bible Study Notes Chapters 42-43

3/4/2012
Psalm 42

-Theme: Thirst for the living God with joy and thanksgiving, letting your requests be made known to Him. Do not despair or be disturbed; hope in the LORD for the help of His presence. Pray to the God of your life and the improver of your countenance.

-*Application* This famous line “As the deer pants for the water brooks, so my soul pants for You, O God” is a beautiful picture of our need for the LORD in our lives (Psalm 42:1). It reminds me of being in Israel up in the northern section of Dan where we came across a water brook that fed the Sea of Galilee. The spring water was so pure that we could drink of it and refresh ourselves on the hike we were doing. Our God is refreshing when we consider that He is living and present with us in each and every circumstance we face. He has not forgotten us and He will lift our expression and hope in days of despair and loneliness. Thirst for God!

Psalm 43

-Theme: Hope is in God during times of discouragement.

-*Application* The psalmist asks the question, “Why are you in despair, O my soul? And why are you disturbed within me (Psalm 43:5)?” In this repetition of Psalm 42:11 we find that our only hope is found in God and we should continually praise Him through the storms of life. He is the help of our countenance (expression). We are always in a search for strength during times of weakness. Strength can be found in a variety of ways as a temporary fix, but ultimately our true and lasting strength must come from a higher Source. That Source is Jesus and He is able. Turn to Him! Accept no substitute.

Verse to Memorize: Psalm 42:5
