Isaiah 61
-When Jesus came to His hometown
of Nazareth by the Spirit, He stood up to read in the Synagogue this very
passage out of Isaiah the prophet (Luke 4:14-21). He was the fulfillment of
this prophecy. He was the anointed One. God’s Spirit was upon Him. He brought
the good news to the afflicted. He bound up the brokenhearted. He proclaimed
liberty to those in captivity and freedom to the prisoners. The favorable year
of the LORD was given to Him, and one day He will recompense the vengeance of
the Almighty. He comforts those who mourn, and He gives a garland, which is
alive, rather than dead ashes. His Spirit is the oil of gladness rather than
mourning. His mantle is of praise instead of a spirit of fainting. His people
are the oaks of righteousness and the planting of the LORD for the purpose of
His glorification (Isaiah 61:1-3).
-Israel will be rebuilt. The
ancient ruins will resurrect from the former devastations. Strangers and
foreigners will aid in the work and building. And, God’s people will be called
“the priests of the LORD” and “ministers of our God.” God’s chosen will eat the
wealth of nations and boast in their riches. Instead of awful shame and
humiliation, they will receive a double portion of the blessings of God with
shouts of everlasting joy (Isaiah 61:4-7).
-The LORD loves justice and hates
robbery in the burnt offering. He is faithful to repay the evil that is done
under the sun by His scales of authority. His covenant is everlasting and will
be upheld by Him. He will always bless the offspring of Abraham (Genesis 12).
-Isaiah reveals in the majesty of
his LORD in the final two verses of the chapter. He will rejoice greatly in the
LORD and exalt his God. For the LORD has clothed him with garments of salvation
and a robe of righteousness. “As a bridegroom decks himself with a garland, and
as a bride adorns herself with jewels” is the LORD’s favor and union. He causes
righteousness and praise to spring up before all the nations (Isaiah 61:10-11).
*Application* What incredible Words from the LORD and His Savior Jesus Christ.
Again we see that we are clothed by His righteousness alone, and our total care
is dependent upon Him. He is the Living Redeemer who is precious in our sight.
