Numbers 4
-The duties of the descendents of Kohath, Gershon, and
Merari given by God to Moses and Aaron are delineated in this chapter. These
were the sons of Levi with Levitical duties and concerns in taking care of the
tabernacle and the worship of Almighty God. A census was taken for the men
between the ages of 30 and 50 for the time of their fulfilling the duties that
God had assigned in the care of His temporary House with the tent of meeting
and all its surroundings outlined and ordained earlier in the Torah. These men
had specific order and responsibilities to take good care of the things of God,
and laymen were not allowed to touch the holy things. Else, they faced the
death penalty (Numbers 3:10, 38). Even certain Levites were not allowed to go
in and see the holy objects even for a moment lest they die (Numbers 4:20). So
these men were numbered and given duties for serving and carrying according to the
command of the LORD through Moses, and they obeyed up to this point in the
journey (Numbers 4:49).
-*Application* God has order to His plan and program. He is
not the God of confusion or chaos (1 Corinthians 14:33). He has ultimate and
sovereign control over every matter and expects His people to follow His Divine
directions when He crystalizes the direction they should go. Obedience when we
know God’s will becomes a matter of extreme importance for us, His children. Good
communication builds good fellowship within a relationship. He wants us to
trust in Him, even when we don’t understand. He will have things work out just
fine when we do. Learn to lean on His understanding more than your own
rationale (Proverbs 3:5-6). This is the true heart of worship and it is never
to be taken lightly.
