Hosea 9
-The crux of this chapter, and the entire book in many respects,
depicting God’s retribution and wrath is summed up in the last verse. Hosea
says, “My God will cast them away because they
have not listened to Him; and they will be wanderers among the nations (Hosea 9:17).” Their harlotry has left
the LORD no choice but to abandon them to destruction and desolation. The day
of punishment has come because of their iniquity and refusal to acknowledge the
LORD. Instead they sought after false gods and temporary prosperity on their
own. Israel and Ephraim in particular will have their glory fly away like a
bird. It will be gone forever. *Application* What a tragedy to throw away a
great and magnificent gift. The LORD has offered us all a chance to come to Him
and receive His forgiveness. To be an apostate (one who falls away) is the
greatest tragedy because of the fact that you tasted the truth of God’s grace,
but turned away from it to follow a false way (Hebrews 6:1-9).This is where the
steadfastness of God and the human will is paramount to our salvation and
blessing. The perseverance of the believer is the security of the believer.
Endure as a good soldier to the end and overcome (2 Timothy 2:3-4, 12, Revelation
2:26)! Don’t be like faithless Ephraim. Where is your heart? Don’t build the
house of your soul on shifting sand, but on the Rock of Christ, which is a sure
foundation and the truth (Luke 6:45-49, Matthew 7:21-26).
